Can I run VectorVu-PC without a TTR500A?
Subject: Setup & Operation | Published: October 2026 | FAQ ID: KB-01292Viewing expanded preview
Question: Can I run VectorVu-PC without a TTR500A?
Answer: Yes, you can run VectorVu-PC in simulation mode. VectorVu-PC has an internal VNA simulator that you can use for analysis without a TTR500 unit. Use Connection Manager to switch to simulator mode. When you connect the simulator, the Instrument Status bar turns gray. This is because the information in the Instrument Status bar only applies to measurements made using TTR500 units.
Click System > More > Simulator to open the simulator submenu. These options are available:
Load SnP:
When you use the internal simulator in VectorVu-PC, use the Load SnP function to load data in the SnP (Touchstone) format for offline analyses. The SnP file completely represents the S-parameters of a DUT. When you use the SnP file of a DUT in the offline (simulator) mode: You do not need the actual DUT for analysis. Therefore, you can share parameter data with other users. You do not need to be at the test location to analyze the data.
Load Noise Floor:
Set the noise floor level for your measurements using the Noise Floor function. The noise floor is the sum of all noise sources and unwanted signals in the VNA. It limits the smallest measurement that can be isolated from the noise. Ideally, a lower noise floor is better for more accurate measurements.

Ohms: What is AUTO or MANUAL mode when measuring Resistance with a 2400?
Subject: Setup & Operation | Published: October 2026 | FAQ ID: KB-01492Viewing expanded preview
Question: Ohms: What is AUTO or MANUAL mode when measuring Resistance with a 2400?
Answer:
The AUTO resistance measuring mode of the Model 2400 configures the unit to source current, measure voltage and calculate resistance. The magnitude of the source current is selected automatically by the resistance range, much like a typical Digital Multimeter.
The MANUAL resistance measuring mode of the Model 2400 allows the user to select a source of voltage or a source of current. If current is sourced then voltage is measured. If voltage is sourced then current is measured. The value of the source is also user defined. This mode allows very tight control over the resistance measurement.

What user interface differences should I expect to see between a standard 5 or 6 Series MSO and one equipped with the optional Windows 10 operating system?
Subject: Products | Published: October 2026 | FAQ ID: KB-01417Viewing expanded preview
Question: What user interface differences should I expect to see between a standard 5 or 6 Series MSO and one equipped with the optional Windows 10 operating system?
Answer: When you purchase a 5 Series MSO with the 5-WIN option or a 6 Series MSO with the 6-WIN option installed, or upgrade your 5 Series MSO with the SUP5-WIN upgrade, or upgrade your 6 Series MSO with the SUP6-WIN upgrade, you will see very few differences in the user interface. However, you may notice a few minor differences with Windows, including:
There are minimize, restore down / maximize, and close buttons in the upper right corner of the application:
- There is an Exit choice in the File menu for exiting the scope application. (The Shutdown selection turns off the entire instrument.)
- The File Utilities choice in the File menu opens a standard Windows Explorer instance.
- When one or more TekExpress applications are installed, an Application menu item appears in the menu bar between Edit and Utility.
- Standard Windows tools are available to mount/unmount network drives.
- Standard Windows tools are available to create a login password or user accounts.
- LAN settings are changed through standard Windows functionality instead of in the scope application.
- Windows does not support dimming the screen as a screen-saver.
- Standard Remote Desktop is available instead of e*Scope for remote control.
- You need to tap the edge of the graticule to bring the Results bar back. A swipe from the right does not work.
- Windows displays the font slightly thinner and less bold.
- TekSecure takes only a few seconds to run, since most information is stored on the removable SSD.

I saw a warning message when recalling an instrument setup on my 5 or 6 Series MSO. What caused it?
Subject: Troubleshooting | Published: October 2026 | FAQ ID: KB-01422Viewing expanded preview
Question: I saw a warning message when recalling an instrument setup on my 5 or 6 Series MSO. What caused it?
Answer: The 5 and 6 Series MSO will display a pop-up warning message when it is not completely successful recalling the saved state of the instrument with a setup or session file.
The following message will appear on the display:
WARNING
The oscilloscope was unable to
completely restore the state, although
as many settings as possible have been
restored. Possible reasons included:
- A probe or other accessory has been attached or removed
- An option license has expired
(You must acknowledge the warning by tapping the OK button before you can proceed.)
There are several possible causes for the warning:
- Adding or removing a probe may affect the available vertical scales and therefore prevent recall of all settings.
- Recalling the setup on an instrument with a different number of channels prevents recall of all settings.
- Recalling the setup on an instrument that doesn’t have a necessary option license installed or the license has expired will not be able to recall the optional features.
- Recalling a setup that includes reference files will fail if the reference files are no longer available (e.g. the USB drive with the reference files is not installed in the instrument).
- Recalling a setup that includes new firmware features on an instrument with an older firmware version.

How are 5 and 6 Series MSO setup files and session files different? How should I use them?
Subject: Products | Published: October 2026 | FAQ ID: KB-01416Viewing expanded preview
Question: How are 5 and 6 Series MSO setup files and session files different? How should I use them?
Answer: The 5 and 6 Series MSO setup files contain all instrument settings, user-configured analysis, and reference waveforms, so they provide an easy way to return the oscilloscope to a known state. For example, if you want to build a library of standardized tests, you would set up the oscilloscope for each test and save each setup. Then you would recall each setup, on the same or compatible oscilloscope, to repeat the analyses on acquired signals.
The 5 and 6 Series MSO session files contain a setup file as well as all acquired waveform data. Session files enable you to move analysis activities off of the oscilloscope. When session files are recalled, the instrument is returned to its previous state, with waveform data also recalled into acquisition memory, but with the acquisitions stopped. If you have used any of the built-in demos (Utility->Demo), you have experienced session files.

What does “Probe Dynamic Range” mean and how does the 5 and 6 Series MSO indicate it?
Subject: Setup & Operation | Published: October 2026 | FAQ ID: KB-01336Viewing expanded preview
Question: What does “Probe Dynamic Range” mean and how does the 5 and 6 Series MSO indicate it?
Answer:
Oscilloscope probes which contain active circuitry, especially with amplifiers in the signal path, have a limited dynamic range over which the probe behaves linearly. When input signals exceed this range, the signal may be distorted. (Such probes also have a “maximum non-destructive voltage” or absolute maximum input range beyond which the probe and/or the oscilloscope may be permanently damaged!) Both of these specifications are typically shown in the probe data sheet. See probes »
For example:
| Tektronix TekVPI Probe | Input Dynamic Range Spec (Attenuation Range) | Maximum Non-Destruct Voltage (Attenuation Range) |
|---|---|---|
| TAP1500 active probe | ±8 V | ±15 V |
| TAP2500/3500 active probe | ±4 V | ±30 V |
| TDP500/1000 differential probe | ±42 V | ±100 V |
| TDP1500 differential probe | ±8.5 V (10X), ±850 mV (1X) | ±25 V |
| TDP3500 differential probe | ±2 V | ±15 V |
| TMDP0200 differential probe | ±75 V (25X), ±750 V (250X) | 300 V CAT III |
| THDP0200 differential probe | ±150 V (50X), ±1500 V (500X) | 600 V CAT III |
| THDP0100 differential probe | ±600 V (100X), ±600 V (100X) | 1000 V CAT III |
| TIVM differential probes | ±0.5 V (1X) through ±25 V (50X) | ±4.3 V (1X) through ±200 V (50X) |
| TIVH differential probes | ±0.5 V (1X) through ±1250 V (2500X) | ±25 V (1X) through ±2500 V (2500X) |
When a signal is too large at the oscilloscope’s analog-to-digital converter (ADC), the signal is typically “clipped” and the peaks of the signal become flat horizontal lines, often at the top and bottom of the oscilloscope graticule. However, when the signal exceeds the probe’s dynamic range spec (but still within the maximum non-destruct voltage range), the distortion may be more subtle. If it goes uncorrected, the measurement accuracy suffers.
Many Tektronix TekVPI probes contain the dynamic range information and communicate this value to the oscilloscope when the probe is attached or the oscilloscope is powered on. This information can be used to indicate the probe’s dynamic range on the oscilloscope display, providing assurance that the signal is not over-driving the probe. This is especially critical when the oscilloscope is set to a vertical scale value larger than the dynamic range of the probe.
For example, when a TDP1000 differential probe is connected to the oscilloscope, the probe dynamic range indicator looks like this, showing that the probe’s dynamic range is ±42 V:

Does my 5 or 6 Series MSO support multiple displays?
Subject: Products | Published: October 2026 | FAQ ID: KB-01406Viewing expanded preview
Question: Does my 5 or 6 Series MSO support multiple displays?
Answer: Yes, the 5 and 6 Series MSO hardware supports a total of three displays, including the instrument’s internal display. The instrument provides DVI-D, Display Port, and VGA connectors on the rear panel.
The standard instrument (running the Linux operating system) supports multiple monitors, providing duplicated displays. This allows you to use a large external monitor or projector to show the oscilloscope display to several people.
When the instrument is running the Windows operating system, the instrument can support either duplicated displays or extended desktop. Duplicate display mode is the default, but extended desktop can be selected via the Windows interface. To change the display mode, minimize the oscilloscope application, right-click on the desktop, select Graphics Properties…, and tap the Display icon. Duplicated displays enable you to show the oscilloscope display to several people with a large external monitor or projector. Extended desktop enables you to show the oscilloscope’s display to another display device, or show other displays (the oscilloscope’s serial compliance application, test documentation, or a Windows analysis program like Microsoft Excel).
