UC Berkeley’s Dr. Siddiqi presented Keithley Award for Advances in Measurement Science

Thursday, 11 March 2021

BEAVERTON, Ore., March 11, 2021 -- Keithley Instruments, LLC, a Tektronix company, is proud to share that the 2021 Joseph F. Keithley Award for Advances in Measurement Science has been presented to Dr. Irfan Siddiqi, professor of physics at the University of California, Berkeley for his contributions to the field of quantum mechanics.

This prestigious award, endowed by Keithley and the Topical Group on Instrument and Measurement Science (GIMS), was created to celebrate physicists who have been instrumental in developing techniques or equipment that have made a significant impact on the physics community.

Dr. Siddiqi was chosen as this year’s winner for achieving fundamental advances in superconducting parametric amplifiers, including the development of the Josephson traveling wave parametric amplifier, and for their application to quantum measurement and control. His contribution to the field of quantum mechanics has allowed electrical measurements of quantum systems to expand and flourish.

“We’re finally testing quantum mechanics in a frontier that we’ve not tested before,” says Dr. Siddiqi. “I am honored to be recognized for this work, along with my team, and to share my excitement with a community of innovators and scientists who have the same curiosity and drive for exploration in our field.”

Dr. Siddiqi’s award-winning work allows scientists to read out multiple quantum bits, or qubits, at once with single-shot fidelity. This development has created a path for physicists to study broadband quantum phenomena, enabling measurements of the underlying dynamics of quantum systems that were simply not possible before. His work has opened exciting doors to further research, that not only bring us closer to fully practical quantum computers, but also allow us to probe the nature of reality at the boundary of quantum and classical mechanics.

“It’s an honor to be able to support and recognize advances of measurement science,” says Brad Odhner, Keithley technical marketing manager for the Americas. “Keithley and Tektronix have always been measurement companies at their core. When Tektronix was founded 75 years ago, our first innovations, such as the triggered oscilloscopes and guarded amplifier, laid the groundwork for new science and progress. I can’t wait to see where the measurement breakthroughs we’re making today will lead in the next 75 years.”

The Joseph F. Keithley Award for Advances in Measurement Science was founded to honor Joseph F. Keithley for his numerous accomplishments in the areas of sensitive and precision instrument development and measurement techniques. It is managed by the American Physical Society (APS) and awarded annually. More award information can be found at https://www.aps.org/programs/honors/prizes/keithley.cfm.
