TLA700 Series Upgrade Guide

As Tektronix continues to improve the TLA700 logic analyzers, Tektronix will strive to ensure that there is a path for you to keep your mainframe current.

TLA715 or TLA721 Upgrades Available

If you own a TLA715 or TLA721 mainframe, you can upgrade the following capabilities using the TLA7UP Mainframe Field Upgrade Kit:

• Upgrade to add additional replaceable hard disks and a second internal fixed hard disk
• Upgrade to latest TLA Application Software, utilities, and Windows Operating System
• Upgrade to add external oscilloscope capability by adding the iView external oscilloscope interface

TLA7UP Mainframe Field Upgrade Kits

The TLA7UP kits are customer-installable field upgrade kits for the TLA700 Series which provide valuable enhancements to your TLA logic analyzer:

NOTES

1. The latest TLA Application Software has been tested, can be installed, and will be supported by Tektronix only on the Tektronix-supplied version of Windows 2000 Professional.
2. The TLA7UP is designed for “one TLA7UP per TLA714/715/720/721 mainframe”. If upgrading multiple TLA714/715/720/721s, you must order one TLA7UP with the appropriate options for each TLA714/715/720/721 mainframe.
3. If you need to preserve your user files on your current mainframe’s hard disk, please order an additional hard disk drive using TLA7UP Option 10 (TLA714/720) or TLA7UP Option 12 (TLA715/721) and install it as a second, internal fixed hard disk in your mainframe. This procedure is documented in the TLA7UP Instruction Manual. For TLA7UP Option 16/17, TLA7UP Option 37 (new HDD Image CD-ROM) is required since there is a different controller with different drivers. Note that there are now two HDD Image CD-ROMs for the TLA700 mainframes: one for the TLA714/720 controller and a second for the new TLA715/721 controllers.
4. Version 1.6 PatGen Application Software is available either as part of the latest TLA Application Software or on the Web (primarily for TLA704/711 and TLA714/720 users who have Windows 98 and Version 3.2 TLA Application Software).
5. Note: the latest TLA Application Software on the Web does NOT have SnagIt, CheckIt nor the NI USB-to-GPIB SW due to licensing issues. Customers must order TLA7UP Option 36 or 37 to receive these SW components.

Note: All TLA application software has been tested, can be installed and will be supported by Tektronix only on Tektronix-supplied Windows 2000 Professional.

The downloadable version of TLA Application Software does not contain any non-Tektronix licensed software (including CheckIt Utilities, SnagIt, RecordNow Max, and National Instruments GPIB-USB Software). You can receive a copy of the full version by ordering TLA7UP with the appropriate option at no cost.

TLA Application Software Releases

Tektronix continues to innovate and enhance the TLA applications software for the TLA family of logic analyzers. The TLA5000, TLA600 and TLA700 logic analyzers share the same TLA applications software. Setups and data can be quickly and easily shared between the Series. Tektronix has demonstrated its commitment to continually improving the TLA family with several software upgrades since the original Version 1.0 release. The following table shows the compatibility of software used in the TLA by version numbers. Each software version is compatible with the other software versions in the same column. Each column indicates the software or firmware history of the TLA products as shipped from the factory.

Note: All TLA application software has been tested, can be installed, and will be supported by Tektronix only on Tektronix-supplied Windows 2000 Professional.

We are consistently adding to the list of supported oscilloscopes that combine with the TLA Series logic analyzers to provide iView (Integrated View) capability. The following table gives a history of oscilloscopes and TLA Application Software versions along with interim iView updates. This includes which version of TLA software supports which oscilloscopes.

1. "Yes" means supported by iView.
2. "Yes+iV" means supported by iView and iVerify.

Installation Notes

When you purchase a new Logic Analyzer, the basic TLA Version 4.4 application software is installed at the factory. Some software packages must be installed separately, such as microprocessor and bus support packages. For information about these packages, refer to their associated documentation or contact your local Tektronix account manager.

Do not install the TPI Client Software on the logic analyzer. The TPI Client Software is for installation on a separate, remote PC that will control the logic analyzer using the TLA Programmatic Interface (TPI). See the TPI online help on your TLA logic analyzer for more information.

File Compatibility

Saved system files which include setup and data information are "forward-compatible" with each release of TLA applications software, i.e., a V1.1 saved system file will properly load on logic analyzers with Version 4.4 software. However, saved system files are not "backwards-compatible," that is, a Version 4.4 saved system file will not load on a logic analyzer with Version 3.2 or earlier software.

Module Firmware Compatibility

After upgrading the TLA applications software in your mainframe, you will often be required to upgrade the firmware in your logic analyzer, pattern generator, and digitizing oscilloscope modules. However, while you are not required to re-run any performance verification/adjustment procedures, you are encouraged to run both self-calibration and extended diagnostics on all mainframes and instrument modules that have been upgraded. Please note that all instrument modules to be used in a TLA mainframe with Version 4.4 application software must have the instrument module firmware upgraded; otherwise, the TLA application software will not recognize the instrument module. The firmware process, however, is easy-to-do and takes about 5 minutes per instrument module. All of the firmware images are part of each TLA application software release.

TLA Backup Media

Each logic analyzer comes standard with the Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional Operating System and TLA applications software preloaded on the hard disk. CD-ROMs for both Windows and the Version 4.4 TLA applications software are also provided as backup media.

The TLAVu and PatGenVu offline data viewers are on the backup media CD-ROMs for installation on any Windows 2000/XP PC.
