Keithley source measure unit with I-V curve tracer functionality alongside the original I-V curve tracer system from 1955.
Curve Tracer vs. I-V Curve Tracer Software Wednesday, March 22, 2023

Tektronix introduced the industry’s first curve tracer in 1955 to display characteristic curves for vacuum tubes, followed over the years by models for testing transistors, diodes and other solid-state devices. Tektronix curve tracers such as the 576 (below) and 370A/370B went on to broad industry acceptance until production eventually stopped in the mid-eighties. Approximating a power supply and an oscilloscope packaged in the same box, curve tracers source voltage while plotting voltage vs. current.

Analyzing a Raspberry Pi as a RF Transmitter Thursday, March 9, 2023
This hardware/software pair provides many ways to characterize RF signals up to 6.2 GHz, well beyond the output capabilities of the Raspberry Pi. Let's look at a few common RF measurements to get an idea of what characterization is possible, and examine the output of the Raspberry Pi. Carrier Frequency A carrier frequency is the base frequency that will be modulated in an RF signal. Without any …

Identify Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) in 3-Steps Friday, February 24, 2023
Radiated emissions, most often referred to as electromagnetic interference (EMI), are carefully regulated to ensure reliable operation and safety for users of electrical and electronic equipment. Regulations limit the allowable radiated emissions, and to keep their products within these limits, designers invest significant time and effort. One reason why EMI poses challenges is that emissions are …

4 Methods for Measuring Pulse Modulations in Radar Signals Friday, January 20, 2023
Modern radar signals make use of intra-pulse modulation or modulation on pulse (MOP), such as a linear frequency modulation (LFM), or some form of phase modulation (such as a bi-phase Barker code) to improve range resolution. They also include modulation on pulse to occupy more bandwidth and thus decrease the probability of intercept (POI). Additionally, intra-pulse modulation can include some …
