This video is a side-by-side comparison of real-time spectrum analysis on the Tektronix RSA5000 and Agilent PXA signal analyzer that demonstrates the importance of understanding key architectural tradeoffs. Some Spectrum Analyzers bypass the pre-selector in RTSA mode, which at times can generate signals inside the instrument that actually aren’t present. Tektronix Spectrum Analyzers have an image free architecture which eliminates any concern whether the signals that you are examining are real or not. For the Tektronix RSA architecture, there is an advantage to this architecture for applications like spectrum management and a low level spur search, where you can have more confidence that the signals you are seeing are not produced inside the analyzer.
