Can you explain the usage of the Guard terminal on a DMM?

Guard terminals are only needed if the DMM has poor isolation from the case. If very high isolation is needed, use a triaxial electrometer, such as the Model 6517A. This has greater than 1014 ohms input resistance, and very high effective isolation when guard is properly connected.
