MPEG-2 / MPEG-4 / H.264

Extensions to the MPEG-2 standard to incorporate H.264 as an additional Elementary Stream (ES) type within an MPEG-2 Transport Stream (TS), have made H.264 accessible and attractive to broadcasters and network operators. The transition presents a challenge for equipment manufacturers developing H.264 variants because although H.264 offers twice the compression efficiency of MPEG-2, twice the processing complexity is required. Tektronix is able to support an end-to-end H.264 solution, encompassing the 3 main phases, Design, Deploy and Manage.

MPEG-2 Transport Stream technology continues to thrive in a variety of applications including next generation compression H.264 or MPEG-4 encoders. Design verification and debug/analysis may involve MPEG-2 TS testing as well as the evaluation of the elementary stream data.

Critical RF Measurements in Cable, Satellite and Terrestrial DTV Systems

The secret to maintaining reliable and high-quality services over different digital television transmission systems is to focus on critical factors that may compromise the integrity of the system. This application note describes those critical RF test measurements which help to detect such problems before viewers lose their service and picture completely.

A Layman's Guide to PCR Measurements

Program Clock References (PCRs) provide the means for a digital TV receiver to lock its decoded video output to the video source present at the input to an encoder. The subject of PCR measurement is often misunderstood. This technical brief describes impairments that affect the PCR and appropriate..

Video Backhaul

Using the MTM400A video backhauling functionality, discover out how to deliver a remote program to an operator via a network link, even several thousand miles, without altering them in any way and preserving the native compression.

A Guide to MPEG Fundamentals and Protocol Analysis

MPEG is one of the most popular audio/video compression techniques because it is not just a single standard. Instead, it is a range of standards suitable for different applications but based on similar principles. MPEG is an acronym for the Moving Picture Experts Group.

Troubleshooting Quality of Service (QoS) and Quality of Experience (QoE) issues in Video Service Provider Networks

Learn the benefits and faults of the two most common test methods for troubleshooting video signal problems and the critical capabilities needed in an MPEG analyzer.

Video Over IP Cross Layer Measurements

Explore some of the challenges around delivering superior Quality of Service (QoS) in the design, rollout and management of Video over IP Networks.

Vclips Frequently Asked Questions

Vclips comprise several sets of uncompressed ("raw") and compressed video, designed to be used by video compression developers/testers.

PCR Measurements Primer

Engineers and technicians who monitor or measure video parameters must have confidence in the results. We describe in this primer a new procedure for jitter measurements as recommended in TR 101 290.

Testing Video Transports Streams Using Templates

The addition of template testing makes Tektronix test systems, such as the MTM400, a very powerful and cost-effective way of applying scheduled service and related tests to specific target probe points. Transmission-chain errors can be detected and pinpointed promptly by strategically....

MPEG Timing and Synchronization Webinar

Whether your job is to design Encoders and Set Top Boxes (STBs), or to evaluate or integrate them, dealing effectively with timing concerns is essential. A Tektronix Buffer Analyzer can pinpoint the source of timing problems, and our webinar covering Program Clock Reference (PCR) issues and more explains timing principles and their impact on video quality.

Basic MPEG Overview / MPEG Made Easy Webinar

This introduction to MPEG covers Transport Streams, timing, and error types. Watch this webinar to learn about TR101-290 error types, and how it is giving way to ATSC Recommended Practice (A/78), a more meaningful measure of customer impacting events.

MPEG Troubleshooting in Cable Networks Webinar

A must for reviewing measurement guidelines and tools for testing MPEG in cable networks. This webinar covers many topics including the measurement guidelines know as ETSI TR 101 290.
