Extensions to the MPEG-2 standard to incorporate H.264 as an additional Elementary Stream (ES) type within an MPEG-2 Transport Stream (TS), have made H.264 accessible and attractive to broadcasters and network operators. The transition presents a challenge for equipment manufacturers developing H.264 variants because although H.264 offers twice the compression efficiency of MPEG-2, twice the processing complexity is required. Tektronix is able to support an end-to-end H.264 solution, encompassing the 3 main phases, Design, Deploy and Manage.
MPEG-2 Transport Stream technology continues to thrive in a variety of applications including next generation compression H.264 or MPEG-4 encoders. Design verification and debug/analysis may involve MPEG-2 TS testing as well as the evaluation of the elementary stream data.

The secret to maintaining reliable and high-quality services over different digital television transmission systems is to focus on critical factors that may compromise the integrity of the system. This application note describes those critical RF test measurements which help to detect such problems before viewers lose their service and picture completely. |
|
Program Clock References (PCRs) provide the means for a digital TV receiver to lock its decoded video output to the video source present at the input to an encoder. The subject of PCR measurement is often misunderstood. This technical brief describes impairments that affect the PCR and appropriate.. |

MPEG is one of the most popular audio/video compression techniques because it is not just a single standard. Instead, it is a range of standards suitable for different applications but based on similar principles. MPEG is an acronym for the Moving Picture Experts Group. |

Automation systems and servers are moving to many new formats: the element missing from the playout centers of broadcasters is automated QC. In use now are a range of older technologies for QC including human visual QC, baseband and transport stream monitoring equipment. These are not sufficient to find the plethora of errors that can occur in file-based video and nor do they provide the flexibility and re-configurability required... |
