Tektronix Reinforces Video Test Leadership with New Television Demodulator Family

DS1000 family of television demodulators offers high-performance while keeping cost and size down

BEAVERTON, OREGON (December 11, 1996)--Tektronix, Inc. (NYSE:TEK), the world leader in video test, today introduced the DS1000 family of television demodulators. Designed for cable television and network operators and installation and maintenance service providers, the DS1000 family offers a cost-effective combination of accuracy and compactness for assessing the quality of analog television modulated radio frequency (RF) transmission systems.

The DS1000 Family offers the precision needed to make accurate, repeatable measurements of RF signals from 47 MHz to 860 MHz modulated with PAL or NTSC Analog Video. The DS1000 family provides measurement-grade video and near-measurement-grade stereo audio, which enable the user to make repeatable, believable measurements. It also provides several features that maximize ease-of-use. For instance, channel tables can be defined from the front panel controls, eliminating the need for computer set up or E-Prom changes. The availability of full remote control via either RS232 or RS485 allows users to control all front panel functions and develop additional channel tables off site.

The DS1000 family includes versions for common world standards, including systems: M/N (NTSC); B/G, D/K and I (PAL). Specifically, the DS1000 family includes the DS1001 for Systems M/N, the DS1002 for Systems B/G, the DS1003 for System I. Audio support includes BTSC Stereo for system M/N and Dual Sound or NICAM for B/G, D/K and I.

"The DS1000 family is a powerful, compact and cost-effective precision demodulator," said Thomas Tucker, product marketing manager. "It's also the logical companion demodulator for the Tektronix VM100 or VM101 Video Measurement Set."

Like Tektronix' VM100/101, the DS1000 family is built in a one-rack unit high, half-rack unit wide enclosure. The design of the DS1000 family's front panel also is based on the VM100/101.

In addition to a tuning range of 47.25 MHz to 860.25 MHz, the DS1000 family offers the following high-performance capabilities:

  • A Zero Carrier Reference pulse for precise Depth of Modulation measurements to ensure standards compliance and provide subscribers with bright, clear, noise-free pictures.
  • Sensitivity from -20 to +30 dBmV, which provides plenty of headroom for every measurement and removes the guess work about whether your measurement range could exceed the capabilities of the instrument.
  • Superior noise performance (signal-to-noise ratio of more than 56 decibels) that virtually eliminates the chance of a faulty measurement because of noise from the instrument.
  • A receiver input with a range (-20 to +30 dBmV) designed to prevent internally generated spurs (CSO/CTB), which improves ease of use.
  • Differential gain and differential phase of less than 1.5 percent and chromanance/aluminance delay of less than 30 nanoseconds make color measurements precise and repeatable.
