I need to synchronize the outputs of two AWG500 series generators. What settings and connection are necessary?

Question :

I need to synchronize the outputs of two AWG500 series generators. What settings and connection are necessary?

Answer :

The following steps will allow you to synchronize the output of two AWG510's. These steps apply to each AWG. (Note: If you need to synchronize the outputs of AWG520's the only additional steps are the creation of waveforms to be loaded into channel 2.)

The first step is to create a waveform file to be loaded into a sequence. This file will be your data / waveform which will be played out forever.

The second step is to create a sequence with one line. This line will contain the waveform created in the first step. For this waveform you will set Repeat Count to "infinity" and Wait Trigger to "on". Once triggered the waveform(s) will loop forever.

Step 2

Third step is to connect an external trigger source to start both AWG's at the same time. This trigger is applied to a 50-ohm splitter to the external trigger input on the back of each AWG500. The cabling needs to be delay matched so that the trigger edge reaches each input at the same time. Any difference may result in phase difference between generators.

Step 3

Fourth step is the set Run Mode to Triggered and Impedance to 50 ohms. The Trigger input impedance does not have to be 50 ohm but the does match the use of the 50 ohm splitter and 50 ohm coax cabling.

Step 4

Fifth step is to connect an external clock source, which will supply the sample clock. This clock is applied to a 50-ohm splitter to the external clock input on the back of each AWG500. The cabling needs to be delay match so that the clock edge reaches each input at the same time. Any difference may result in phase difference between generators.

Step 5

Last is press Run button. You should see Waiting at the top of the screen. When the external trigger is applied the two AWG's will start outputting at the same time.
