Tektronix Domain Expertise Incorporated Into Measurement Wizard Provides Automation

BEAVERTON, Ore., September 20, 2004 - Tektronix, Inc. (NYSE: TEK), a leading worldwide provider of test, measurement and monitoring instrumentation, today announced the availability of TDSJIT3 version 2 (TDSJIT3 v2), a software package for delivering fast, accurate and easy to use jitter and timing measurements on high performance Tektronix oscilloscopes. The measurement wizard within TDSJIT3 v2 incorporates market leading Tektronix domain knowledge and provides step by step guidance enabling quick and easy jitter measurement and analysis.

Engineers and technicians need to efficiently design, debug, and test devices to achieve shorter time to market, lower development costs, more efficient manufacturing processes, and a higher quality product. A critical element of this process is the measurement and characterization of device, component and system timing noise (jitter). Additional applications where jitter measurements are extremely important include standards compliance tests and debug of both serial and parallel system memory buses such as those used in PCI-Express, DDR and Rambus.

Improved Ease of use

TDSJIT3 v2 automates several functions that were previously manual. For example, the application now autosets the source threshold reference levels, yet provides an override for unusual cases. Measurement configuration and source configuration screens have been separated to make more intuitive how each collection of configuration settings may affect results.

The measurement wizard allows single measurements to be configured using a guided interface. This eliminates many of the shortcomings and mistakes that can occur when a new user is trying to make valid and dependable jitter measurements. TDSJIT3 v2 will lead the user through a set of configuration screens prompting for information about what the customer is trying to measure and configure all appropriate oscilloscope and application settings to deliver a good result.

Complex Spectral Analysis

The new software reliably and accurately analyzes jitter on signals with repeating and non-repeating data patterns. This includes spectral averaging and spectral peak hold. The ability to capture peak events is critical in systems where spurious noise is random or can "flicker" on and off. Peak hold will capture short events to show that there are high magnitude impulses that may deserve further investigation. Spectral averaging complements this by adding the ability to resolve very small continuous noise sources that otherwise may be hidden by random spurious noise. Also added is the ability to correlate jitter amplitude measurements with a measurement of phase noise with a new spectral phase noise plot.

Additional Capabilities

The package also offers the ability to measure Rj/Dj and Tj @ BER on arbitrary patterns. This is a unique feature and allows measurement of data signals even when the customer does not have full control of data content. This has been an issue especially in serial data and telecom applications where protocols prevent static data conditions. Additionally, the package provides filters for many clock and data measurements. This allows a more accurate noise measurement of interest. For example, some SONET systems are only concerned with noise above 12kHz. Assigning both high and low pass filters (forming a bandpass network) will allow measurement of specific frequency range of jitter sources.
