80SJNB and 80SJARB software run on the DSA8300 instruments with Windows 7 Operating System.

80SJNB enhances the capabilities of the DSA8300 Digital Serial Analyzer by providing Jitter, Noise, and BER analysis (Essentials) and features for de-embedding of test fixtures, channel emulation based on TDR/TDT and S-parameter models, and FFE/DFE equalizer support (Advanced).

The purpose of new version V3.0.9.0 of 80SJNB, Jitter, Noise, BER and Serial Data Link Analysis software is to improve the jitter floor when using phase correction modes.

80SJARB software provides basic jitter measurements (including J2 and J9 as specified by IEEE 802.3ba) for arbitrary data signals acquired by the Tektronix DSA8300 Digital Serial Analyzer sampling oscilloscope.

Version 3.0.5.0 of 80SJARB, Jitter Analysis of Arbitrary Data Software, is a companion software application included in the same installer, and available either with its own license, or whenever any 80SJNB license is found.

80SJNB - Jitter, NOise, BER and Serial Data Link Analysis Software

1 Introduction

The purpose of this new versions V3.0.9.0 of 80SJNB, Jitter, Noise,
BER and Serial Data Link Analysis software is to enhance the
capabilities of the DSA8300 Digital Serial Analyzer by providing Jitter,
Noise, and BER analysis (Essentials) and features for de-embedding of
test fixtures, channel emulation based on TDR/TDT and S-parameter
models, and FFE/DFE equalizer support (Advanced).

All capabilities of the previous versions of 80SJNB have been carried
over to this new release, including the latest crosstalk aware
analysis methodologies.

Demo license:

For demonstration purposes the full Advanced version of 80SJNB will
start and run on a mainframe, without any key, for a total of ten
times. Please contact Tektronix to purchase a license.

New license:

80SJNB can be purchased with either the option key for Essential or
the option key for Advanced features.

This document addresses operations related to the specifics of
working with 80SJNB on the DSA8300.

2 Installation

Please contact your Tektronix representative for ordering information
(contact information is at the end of this document). Alternatively
follow the link to the Tektronix web site for installation

2.1 Requirements for Installing and Running 80SJNB Software

2.1.1 DSA8300 Product Software Version

In order to install 80SJNB the DSA8300 product software has to be
version 6.1.0.0 or higher. Please contact your Tektronix representative
if an upgrade is needed. The upgrade software is available on the
Tektronix web site, as well.

2.1.2 DSA8300 Advanced Trigger Option

80SJNB requires that the DSA8300 is equipped with the Advanced
Trigger Option (ADVTRIG). Contact Tektronix about purchasing this option.

2.1.3 DSA8300 Phase Reference Module (82A04)

For acquisition and analysis in presence of Spread Spectrum Clocking
(SSC), this application requires that the DSA8300 oscilloscope be
equipped with a Tektronix 82A04 Phase Reference module. Contact
Tektronix about purchasing the module for your oscilloscope.

2.2 Installing the Product Software

Installing the Product Software requires administrative privileges
since the installation routines need to modify settings that apply to
all instrument users. The factory installation of the Windows 7
operating system is configured to automatically log into the
"Administrator" account (no password is needed) during the boot process. If
this behavior has not been modified, then you are ready to install the
Product Software. Otherwise, you will need to manually log into the
instrument as an administrator.

If installation from a LAN is desirable, the contents of the Product
Software CD (or the downloaded Web installer) may be copied to a
file server. The autorun.exe program must be executed manually to
proceed with installation over the network. Although the Windows 7
operating system supports automated application deployment features such
as "Systems Management Server", automated deployment of the Product
Software has not been tested with this release. We do not anticipate
any unique automated deployment issues with this version of the
Product Software.

To install the 80SJNB Essentials or 80SJNB Advanced, JNB Version
3.0.9.0 software:

1.  Insert the Product Application Software CD and run the
autorun.exe.
2.  Select "80SJNB Jitter, Noise, and BER Analyzer".
3.  When installation is complete, consider installing the "80SJARB -
Arbitrary Jitter Analyzer", or Finish with an instrument
reboot. The reboot is required before either application will run.

The latest version of 80SJNB software can be found on the Tektronix
web site www.tektronix.com.

2.3 Unexpected Insert Disk 1 Message
It hase been noted that improper installation path could cause an
"Insert Disk 1" error message. In that case, please copy the contents of
the CD into your desktop, and install 80SJNB version 3.0.9.0. This problem
is caused by changes in the install paths between the former vs. current
installation.

2.4 Launching 80SJNB

2.4.1 From TekScope Interface

80SJNB can be launched from the TekScope interface from the
Applications pull-down menu.Selecting 80SJNB entry will start JNB,
and will run using the appropriate option that has been installed on the
instrument.

2.4.2 Using Shortcuts

Two shortcuts are also available; one from the Windows Start-> All
Programs->Tektronix Applications->80SJNB, and one from the Windows 7
desktop.

2.4.3 Programmatic Interface (PI)

The PI command that activates the 80SJNB application is targeted to
the DSA8300 scope.

For TekScope verions greater than 6.1.0.0, to activate or launch 80SJNB
use the following command:

APPLICATION:ACTIVATE "80SJNB"

Depending on the resident option, the appropriate 80SJNB will be
launch.

NOTE: The two commands used for TekScope version 6.0.3.0 no longer work:

APPLICATION:ACTIVATE "80SJNBEssentials"

APPLICATION:ACTIVATE "80SJNBAdvanced"

NOTE: Make sure you install TekScope application before installing
80SJNB.

2.6 Obtaining an 80SJNB Option Key

Contact your Tektronix representative, or go to the online link - see
information in Contacting Tektronix section of this document - to
order an Option Key (license) for the 80SJNB software.

To obtain an Option Key, use the Utilities->Option Installation... menu
entry in the oscilloscope toolbar to collect the following
information: Model Number, Serial Number and Unique ID values. This data is
required to order an Option Key.

2.7 Enabling the 80SJNB Option Key

After receiving an Option Key, use the same Utilities->Option
Installation... menu entry to access the Option Installation Information
dialog. Enter the key in the designated field, and click the "Continue"
button when prompted. If the key has been entered correctly, the
option will be enabled, and you may begin using the 80SJNB application.
If not, the "Option Installation Failed" dialog is shown, with a
prompt to re-enter the key value.

3 Benefits of Installing 80SJNB Version 3.0.9.0

This release of the 80SJNB running on the new sampling
platform, DSA8300, will benefit from the improvements brought
by the DSA8300 over the older series of sampling scopes. All
features of previous releases of 80SJNB are supported, and some of the key
features of the previous release are listed below.

New, crosstalk-aware analysis method for jitter and noise breakdown
is available. This method is a combination of spectral analysis and
of extrapolation of the CDF (cumulative density function) in the Q
space. This new method is the default and is labeled "Spectral + BUJ"
in the user interface. We recommend this method as it
handles accurately the effects of crosstalk on the estimation of
total jitter and noise at specified bit error rates, TJ@BER and TN@BER.

For backward-compatibility reasons the previous method is still
available under the user interface name "Spectral (Legacy)" - this method
based on spectral separation only of the uncorrelated jitter
elements. In presence of complex bounded jitter or noise (called BUJ,
often caused by crosstalk) this legacy method sometimes results in
overestimation of total jitter and noise.

1.  The new measurements, well positioned to characterize crosstalk
are:

* BUJ(d-d) - Bounded Uncorrelated Jitter
* NPJ(d-d) - Non-Periodic Jitter
* BUN(d-d) - Bounded Uncorrelated Noise
* NPN(d-d) - Non-Periodic Noise

Access to these new measurements is available from the user
interface and the programmatic interface.

2.  Significant improvements to the analysis in presence of Spread
Spectrum Clocking (SSC) in support of the new generation of
SATA/SAS standards running at 12Gbps have been made.

Please note that the usage of SSC on a sampling oscilloscope
requires a special setup with the Phase Reference module and cabling of
specified cable lengths - contact Tektronix for details.

3.  Support for increased length de-embedding filters, up to 20,000
coefficients.

4 Changes from Previous Releases

For users of the previous versions of 80SJNB running on the DSA8200
instruments, here are the changes in user interface and programmatic
control commands. Note: This version is not compatible with the
DSA8200 oscilloscope or previous series.

4.1 Pattern Sync Control Commands

Two commands controlling the device that provides pattern synchronous
triggers became irrelevant.

4.1.1 Pattern Sync Source

Since the device that generates the pattern synchronous triggers is
available as a built in the instrument, the Pattern Sync Source
control is no longer needed, and the PI command is no longer available.

4.1.2 Data to Clock Ratio

The Data to Clock Ratio control is now under the application control.
User input is no longer needed.

In case Spread Spectrum Clocking (SSC) is present in the signal, a
Recommended Data to Clock Ratio is displayed. The user is expected to
provide or setup the Clock Recovery Unit such that the data to clock
ratio is set according to the recommendation.

The PI command controlling the ratio is no longer available.

4.2 Pattern Clock Sources

The Pattern Sync built-in capability provides user pattern
synchronous triggers. The feature, enabled by the Advanced Trigger Option
(ADVTRIG), is driven by the Pattern Clock.

The available Pattern Clock sources depend on the instrument
configuration. The default selection is the CLOCK INPUT/PRESCALE front panel
connector.

When the oscilloscope is equipped with one or more clock recovery
(CR) capable modules, the CR units are also available as source for
Pattern Clock.

Each native clock recovery source appears on the Pattern Clock source
list twice to allow for two different configurations:

1.  Selecting "Cx Clock Recovery" sets the instrument to pick up the
recovered clock from the back of the module using an internal
signal path.
2.  Selecting "Cx CR to Clock/Prescale Input" sets the instrument clock
recovery signal source to the CLOCK INPUT/PRESCALE TRIGGER
input. User is responsible for connecting the recovered clock from
the CR output to the front panel input.

For best jitter performance use the front panel routing.

Consult the programming guide for the PI commands syntax.

5 Known Limitations

5.1 Running Applications Simultaneously

Attempting to run both IConnect software and 80SJNB at the same time
may cause problems and one or the other, or both applications will
not work properly. Having both applications active at the same time,
even if they are not collecting data, may cause improper operation
of either application. Each application will work properly when run
individually. Be sure to exit one application before starting the
other.

5.2 Install TekScope Application before 80SJNB

Always install TekScope application before installing 80SJNB. For
example: after a restore OS, install TekScope before installing the new
version of 80SJNB. Wrong information could be displayed if order is
reversed.

5.3 Checking Version Number via Programmatic Interface (PI)

The following PI command will return the current version number of
80SJNB:

5.4 On-line Help Error (PI)

The PI command syntax that sets or queries an optical channel
wavelength is:

5.5 Installing JNB from CD Subfolder Fails with Unhandled Exception at Start

Do not install 80SJNB from the 80SJNB subfolder on the CD.
Always use the "autorun.exe" program at the top of the CD to install 80SJNB.
Installing from the 80SJNB subfolder will not install the Matlab run time
library, and attempting to run 80SJNB will result in an unhandled exception.

5.6 Print Issues

Print does not size figure correctly in Landscape orientation;
use Portrait instead.
In order to print into a file, use "Print to File" entry from
File menu.

5.7 No Resume Available from Programmatic Interface

If you Pause execution from PI, the next Run command will restart
the acquisition and analysis cycle, rather than resume it.

5.8 The Eye diagram probability density function, the BER contour density function

The probabilities of the uncorrelated bounded components are rendered
with regard for the accuracy of their low-probability tails.  The probability
distribution in the high probability region of these functions is non-physical.
Note that his comment is only relevant to the "Spectral + BUJ" mode.

5.9 Decomposition of bounded uncorrelated jitter into the two components
(bounded uncorrelated timing jitter and bounded uncorrelated noise)
is an estimate only

Current release doesn’t accurately distinguish whether the observed
bounded uncorrelated jitter is caused by timing or by noise distribution.

6 Examples

A set of example files are included that configure the serial link
(Advanced option) with an arbitrary FIR filter and include a channel
descriptor defined either in the time domain or in the frequency
domain.

The example files are installed in the following directory:

The examples include three Gaussian FIR filters, a generic
S-parameter file, S-parameters for an InfiniBand 5 m cable, time domain
waveforms for an HDMI cable, and finally TDR waveform pair for a 1 m SATA
cable.

7 Programming Samples

The 80SJNB Online Help contains three program samples:

* Configure and operate 80SJNB. Setup acquisition, run, and read
results. Identify and characterize error conditions.
* Measure Jitter in Presence of SSC. Configure acquisition and
accessories for characterizing SSC. Run and read results.
* Compensate for Signal Path Impairments with Equalization. It
illustrates how to emulate severe ISI by using a Channel emulator, then
use Equalizer for compensating for channel impairments, then
assess results by measuring data dependent jitter and vertical eye
opening.

80SJARB - Jitter Analysis of Arbitrary Data Software

Introduction

The purpose of this new version V3.0.5.0 of 80SJARB, Jitter Analysis
of Arbitrary Data software is to enhance the capabilities of the
Tektronix DSA8300 Digital Serial Analyzer sampling oscilloscope. All
capabilities of the previous versions of 80SJARB have been carried
over to this new release.

Demo license:

For demonstration purposes 80SJARB will run on a mainframe without a
key, but it will cease to function after it has been run a total of
10 times. After the free trials expire, a valid Option Key is
required to permanently enable the product.

If the instrument is already equipped with a license for 80SJNB
Essentials or 80SJNB Advanced, no license key is required for running
80SJARB.

New license:

The 80SJARB application requires a valid Option Key to run. Contact
Tektronix to purchase the product.

3 Key Benefits of Installing 80SJARB

The 80SJARB Jitter Analysis of Arbitrary Data software enhances the
capabilities of the DSA8300 Tektronix sampling oscilloscopes. This
application provides basic jitter measurements for arbitrary data
signals, including:

* J2 - Total jitter for Bit Error Rate (BER) = 2.5E-03
* J9 - Total jitter for BER = 2.5E-10
* Tj - Total jitter for BER = 1.0E-12
* DJδδ -  Deterministic jitter (Dual Dirac method)
* RJδδ - Random jitter (Dual Dirac method)
* Jitter bathtub curve graph (both measured and extrapolated data)
* Histogram of the acquired data

The accuracy and repeatability of all measurements improves as the
application acquires additional data. While the standards specify
that J2 and J9 measurements be taken on a minimum of 10,000 points,
the 80SJARB application acquires data beyond this minimum requirement
(in Free-run mode) and shows the number of points used for the
extrapolated measurement calculations.

Tektronix also offers two other jitter measurement applications for
the DSA8300 oscilloscope: 80SJNB (Jitter, Noise and BER Analysis
Essentials) and 80SJNB-01 (Jitter, Noise and BER Analysis Advanced).
Shown below is a comparison of Tektronix' sampling oscilloscope jitter

4 Known Limitations

Only directly 80SJARB relevant ones are listed here:

4.1 Do Not Attempt to Run 80SJARB, 80SJNB or IConnect Simultaneously

Attempting to run any of these applications at the same time may
cause problems and the applications will not work properly. More than
one application active at a time, even if not collecting data may
cause improper operation. Each application will work properly when run
individually. Be sure to exit one application before starting
another.

80SJARB has a Hibernate mode, which allows for running 80SJNB while
80SJARB is active.

4.2 Interaction with Instrument Default Setup

An oscilloscope Default Setup will delete the 80SJARB state. Since at
this time 80SJARB does not have an equivalent functionality, it is
necessary to restart 80SJARB after an instrument Default Setup
action.

4.3 Analysis on Previously Acquired Data

80SJARB will analyze data that has been acquired and stored in a
histogram. This feature applies only to data acquired on a Main time
base. A known limitation is that if data has been acquired in a
waveform database and histogram on a Mag view, the analysis results will
not be correct.

4.4 Stop Applications before Exit

It has been noted that exiting the application while running in Free
Run mode and displaying both data plots the scope front panel could
remain locked. Stopping the application before exit will avoid this
issue. The following programmatic interface command will unlock the
scope front panel:

INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS

1.  Click on the link to download the executable. If you are
connecting to the Internet directly from your DSA8300 instrument,
select the Run option. This will download and unpack the installation
files on your instrument. Follow the instructions to start the installation
and then skip to step 4 or 5.  If you are using a PC, select the Save option.
This will save the compressed file to a location on your computer.

2.  If you are installing a new version of the application on your instrument
you will need to transfer the compressed file to your DSA8300 instrument into
a temporary directory.

3.  Double click the downloaded file. Click the Setup button to start the
Winzip extractor to unpack the files to your instrument or workstation and
start the installation program.

4.  Begin the installation of the 80SJNB Application by clicking on
the Install Software option at left, then the Tektronix 80SJNB Jitter, Noise,
and BER Analysis Software link at right.  Once the installation has completed,
reboot the instrument.

5.  Begin the installation of the 80SJARB Application by clicking on
the Install Software option at left, then the Tektronix 80SJARB Jitter
Analysis of Arbitrary Data Sofware link at right. Once the installation has
completed, reboot the instrument.

NOTE: We strongly recommend using autorun.exe program for installing your
software.  This will ensure proper installation of all required
software components.
