80SJNB JITTER, NOISE, AND BER ANALYSIS SOFTWARE

80SJNB software enhances the capabilities of the DSA8200,CSA/TDS8000 series sampling oscilloscopes by providing extensive jitter, noise, and BER analysis. Includes support for Spread Spectrum Clocking. New features include new measurements, such as data dependent pulse width shrinkage (DDPWS), and save and recall of acquired signal. The Advanced version supports serial data link analysis (SDLA) with transmit side equalization, physical link emulation, and receive side FFE/DFE equalization. 1 Introduction

This new release of 80SJNB, Jitter, Noise, BER, and Serial Data Link
Analysis software improves the ability to analyze and equalize very
lossy serial data links that close the eyes at the receiver side,
plots eye diagrams at each stage of the signal path to provide more
insight into the effects of the active Signal Path elements; handles
channels with over 30 dB of loss at 1st harmonic, supports complete
data set save and recall; adds the DDPWS (Data Dependent Pulse Width
Shrinkage) measurement and plot In order to enhance the serial link
data analysis capabilities a large set of pre-emphasis and
de-emphasis FIR filters have been made available to the user. For optical
applications, the three 802.3aq standard LRM (Long Reach Multimode)
fiber emulation FIR filters are provided as well. This release
addresses a number of outstanding bugs.

The 80SJNB software application enhances the capabilities of the
DSA8200, CSA/TDS8000B, and CSA/TDS8200 series sampling oscilloscopes by
providing Jitter, Noise, and BER analysis including support for
Spread Spectrum Clocking (Essentials), and features for de-embedding of
the fixture, channel emulation, and FFE/DFE equalizer support
(Advanced).

The full software configuration, including the Advanced option,
requires a valid Option Key and an 80A06 PatternSync module to run. For
demonstration purposes the option will also run on a mainframe
without the key, but it will cease to function after it has been run a
total of 7 times. After the free trials expire, a valid Option Key is
required to permanently enable the product.

There are two option keys: one for Essentials, and one for Advanced
features. Valid key for previous version of 80SJNB (v1.0.0.*) is
accepted as a valid key for the Essentials feature set. Upgrade to
Advanced is available, please contact you local Tektronix office. A valid
key for v2.0.0.* is fully accepted for this version.

This document addresses issues related to the specifics of working
with 80SJNB. Also, see the Release Notes for the base instrument
software upgrade found on the installation CD.

2 Installation

2.1 Minimum System Requirements

The minimum system requirements for 80SJNB 2.1.0.* are:

* 512+ MB of RAM
* 40+ GB Hard Drive
* 2+ GHz CPU (DSA8200) or 500+ MHz CPU (TDS/CSA8000 Series)
* Windows XP Professional operating system
* TDS/CSA/DSA8x00 series instrument v5.0.0.* software

All DSA8200 instruments are known to meet the minimum system
requirements. All TDS/CSA8000 Series instruments that were already
upgraded with a Tektronix upgrade kit that included Windows XP are also
known to meet the minimum requirements.

All other instruments need to be upgraded with an upgrade kit that
includes Windows XP. The part numbers for the Up Kits are: CSA8UP XP,
TDS8UP XP, CSA8BUPXP, TDS8BUPXP, CSA82UPXP and TDS82UPXP.

2.2 Installing the Product Software

Installing the Product Software requires administrative privileges
since the installation routines need to modify settings that apply to
all instrument users. The factory installation of the Windows XP
Professional operating system is configured to automatically log into
the "Administrator" account (no password is needed) during the boot
process. If this behavior has not been modified, then you are ready
to install the Product Software. Otherwise, you will need to manually
log into the instrument as an administrator.

It may be necessary to disable virus scanning software, or other
third party software packages in order to reliably install the Product
Software. It is not necessary to terminate the TekScope application
in order to install an upgrade to the Product Software. However, it
is necessary to exit the 80SJNB application, if it is running, before
installing 80SJNB 2.1.0.*.

If installation from a LAN is desirable, the contents of the Product
Software CD (or the downloaded Web installer) may be copied to a
file server. The autorun.exe program must be executed manually to
proceed with installation over the network. Although the Windows XP
Professional operating system supports automated application deployment
features such as "Systems Management Server", automated deployment of
the Product Software has not been tested with this release. We do
not anticipate any unique automated deployment issues with this
version of the Product Software.

For restoring the operating system see the Release Notes for the
Tektronix 8000 Series latest release, v5.0.0.*

Note: Once the 80SJNB Essentials or 80SJNB Advanced have been
installed on the instrument, 80SJNB, v1.0.0.* cannot be reinstalled.

NOTE: Make sure you install TekScope application before launching
80SJNB.

2.3 Launching 80SJNB

80JNB can be launched from the TekScope interface from the
Applications pull-down menu. Two shortcuts are also available; one from the
Start-> Programs->Tektronix Applications->80SJNB, and one from the
Windows desktop.

NOTE: If TekScope is acquiring data, it should be stopped (using the
Run/Stop front panel button or the Run/Stop button in the toolbar)
to reduce the time it takes for the 80SJNB application to come up.

2.5 Obtaining an 80SJNB Option Key

Contact your Tektronix representative, or go to the online link - see
information in Contacting Tektronix section of this document � to
order an Option Key (license) for the 80SJNB software.

For current users of the 80SJNB (v1.0.0*), the Essential package is
available as a free upgrade. The Advanced package requires purchasing
a new Option Key (license). Current users of v2.0.0.* can use
v2.1.0.* with their existing key.

To obtain an Option Key, use the Utilities->Option Installation... menu
entry in the oscilloscope toolbar to collect the following
information: Model Number, Serial Number and Unique ID values. This data is
required to order an Option Key.

2.6 Enabling the 80SJNB Option Key

After receiving an Option Key, use the same Utilities->Option
Installation... menu entry to access the Option Installation Information
dialog. Enter the key in the designated field, and click the "Continue"
button when prompted. If the key has been entered correctly, the
option will be enabled, and you may begin using the 80SJNB application.
If not, the "Option Installation Failed" dialog is shown, with a
prompt to re-enter the key value.

3 Benefits of Installing 80SJNB v2.1.0.*

3.1 Key New Features

The Essential release 2.1.0.* has improvements in the following
areas:

* Enhanced support for analyzing closed eyes.
* Plotting of eye diagrams at each stage of the signal path.
* Saving and recalling of the complete data set.
* DDPWS measurement and chart.
* Corrections to previously reported defects

3.2 Improvements to Previous Release

The following are some of the notable improvements included in this
release:

* 80SJNB will now correctly read S-parameter files created from VNAs
that do not have a DC value.
* The Examine... MATLAB window now defaults to horizontal zoom only for
all vs. bit, spectrum and SSC charts.
* A "Default Setup" menu item was added to the "Setup" menu to allow
for setting 80SJNB (and TekScope) to default settings.
* Programmable commands in the on-line help can now be searched and
cut-and-pasted.
* Programming Tips were added to the on-line help.
* Closing an Examine... window no longer restarts a paused acquisition.
* A Paused acquisition can now be resumed from the Programmable
Interface.
* Added new FIR Filters. FIR Tx Equalization folder was added to
Examples, and includes pre-emphasis and de-emphasis FIR filters in the
range of 1dB to 20dB emphasis. The new FIR LRM (Long Reach
Multimode) folder contains the 802.3aq standard fiber emulation FIR
filters: Pre-cursor stress, Post-cursor stress, and Symmetrical stress
models.

4 Known Limitations

Please review the Release Notes for version v5.0.0.* of TekScope for
platform limitations. Only directly 80SJNB relevant ones are listed
here:

4.1 Do Not Attempt to Run 80SJNB and IConnect Simultaneously

Attempting to run both IConnect and 80SJNB at the same time may cause
problems and one or the other, or both applications will not work
properly. Having both applications active at the same time, even if
they are not collecting data, may cause improper operation of either
application. Each application will work properly when run
individually. Be sure to exit one application before starting the other.

4.2 Install TekScope Application before 80SJNB

Always install TekScope application before installing 80SJNB. For
example: after a restore OS, install TekScope before installing the new
version of 80SJNB. Wrong information could be displayed if order is
reversed.

4.3 Unexpected Insert Disk 1 Message

It has been noted that improper installation order could cause an
"Insert Disk 1" spurious message. Should this appear, please use "Add
or Remove Programs" in the Control Panel to uninstall existing 80SJNB
application, then install 80SJNB v2.1.0. The problem is caused by
changes in the install paths between the former vs. current
installation.

4.4 Installing JNB from CD Subfolder Fails with Unhandled Exception at
Start

Do not install 80SJNB from the 80SJNB subfolder on the CD. Always use
the "autorun.exe" program at the top of the CD to install 80SJNB.
Installing from the 80SJNB subfolder will not install the Matlab run
time library, and attempting to run 80SJNB will result in an
unhandled exception.

4.5 Print Issues

Print does not size figures correctly in Landscape orientation; use
Portrait instead.

Use "Print to File" entry from File menu instead of using the check
box in the "Print" dialog, which has been disabled.

4.6 First Run After Installation Takes Several Minutes

After installing 80SJNB version 2.1.0.*, it may take several minutes
for the application to complete initialization. During this time,
the splash screen will display "Initializing MCR". Subsequent
start-ups should proceed much more quickly.

4.7 Programming Synchronization

To ensure synchronization when programming 80SJNB, set the "Clear"
variable to "Data" to clear data prior to making settings changes.
This command provides a synchronization mechanism to ensure that all
changes related to the data clear operation are complete when "Done"
is written as the value for this variable. An additional 400ms delay
should be added after "Done" is set to ensure that the event queue
in 80SJNB has processed all events. This applies to the following
settings:

4.8 Filename Restrictions

Due to how data is read by 80SJNB from TekScope, path and file names
used by 80SJNB cannot have commas in them. This applies to the
following settings:

5 Examples

A set of example files are included that configure the serial link
(Advanced option) with an arbitrary FIR filter and include a channel
descriptor defined either in the time domain or in the frequency
domain.

The example files are installed in the following directory:

The examples include three Gaussian FIR filters, a generic
S-parameter file, S-parameters for an Infiniband 5 m cable, time domain
waveforms for an HDMI cable, and finally TDR waveform pair for a 1 m SATA
cable.

The FIR Tx Equalization folder contains 1dB to 20 dB pre and
de-emphasis FIR filters. The FIR LRM folder contains three FIR filters that
emulate the long reach multimode fibers.

6 Programming Samples

The 80SJNB Online Help contains three program samples:

* Configure and operate 80SJNB. Setup acquisition, run, and read
results. Identify and characterize error conditions.
* Measure Jitter in Presence of SSC. Configure acquisition and
accessories for characterizing SSC. Run and read results.
* Compensate for Signal Path Impairments with Equalization. It
illustrates how to emulate severe ISI by using a Channel emulator, then
use Equalizer for compensating for channel impairments, then
assess results by measuring data dependent jitter and vertical eye
opening.

Instructions

80SJNB Jitter, Noise, and BER Analysis Application for
TDS/CSA8000, TDS/cSA8000B, TDS/CSA8200, and DSA8200 instruments
running Windows XP Professional Operating System

INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS

1.  Click on the link to download the executable. If you are
connecting to the Internet directly from your 8000 Series
instrument, select the Run option. This will download and
unpack the installation files on your instrument. Follow the
instructions to start the installation and then skip to step 4.
If you are using a PC, select the Save option.
This will save the compressed file to a location on your computer.

2.  If you are installing a new version of the application on your instrument
you will need to transfer the compressed file to your 8000 Series
instrument into a temporary directory.

3.  Double click the downloaded file and follow the instructions
provided to unpack the files to your instrument or workstation and
start the installation program. You may use the default directory,
or select a different one by clicking on the Change... button.

4.  Begin the installation of the 80SJNB Application by clicking on
the Install Software option at left, then the 80SJNB Jitter, Noise,
and BER Analysis Application link at right.

5.  The oscilloscope must reboot to complete the installation
process.

NOTE: We strongly recommend using autorun.exe program for installing your
software.  This will ensure proper installation of all required
software components.
