Frequently Asked Questions

If you have any DVI testing questions, please contact us at support@tektronix.com.

Q1: What test equipment do I need for DVI compliance testing?
A: For conducting physical layer testing for transmitter, cable and receivers, you require:

  1. Oscilloscope: Current DVI implementations (up to UXGA resolutions) practically encounter edge rates of the order of 250 to 300 ps, you need an oscilloscope with a rise time specification of the order of 100 ps. Further, the test and measurement guide recommends accumulating 1 million acquisitions for eye measurement using the FastAcq mode offered by DPO/DSA70000B.
  2. Differential probes: P7350, P7330 and P6330 are the recommended probes
  3. Single ended probes: are required for skew testing. P7240 is recommended *
  4. Pattern Generator: A pattern generator is required for receiver jitter tolerance testing. Waveform Generator (AWG7000B Series) and a Data Generator (DG2020) are also required to generate a jittery clock and parallel data. (Refer Fig 10)
  5. TDR: DVI specification also requires TDR testing and DSA8200 with 80E04 is the recommended tool.
  6. Test Fixture: is required for obtaining the probe points. TPA-P and TPA-R test fixtures can be purchased from DDWG at www.ddwg.org
  7. TDSDVI Test Software: for performing compliance tests as per the DVI Test and Measurement guide

Q2: Where can I get the DVI Test Procedures?
A. The DVI specification and test procedures compiled as a DVI test and measurement guide can be downloaded from www.ddwg.org.

Q3: What is the recommended oscilloscope model for DVI testing?
A: Tektronix TDPO/DSA70000B Series Oscilloscopes are the recommended models for DVI testing.

*Note: DPO/DSA70000B series oscilloscopes offers Eye-Trends feature to provide continuous trends of eye formation and various important parameters, such as Tbit, Hopen, Vopen, etc.
